Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practiced in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years. It is a means of pain relief and used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall well being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms. By inserting fine needles into the acupuncture points, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and help restore its natural balance.Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either change the experience of pain or release other chemicals, such as hormones, that influence the body's self-regulating systems. The biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well being.
The needles are as thin as human hair and are tapped in through a tiny tube. The needles are usually left in body for 25 to 30 minutes. Most patients become very relaxed and some even fall asleep.
At the start of your initial visit, you will be asked a detailed list of questions to determine the nature of your complaint, including inquiries into your diet, sleeping, digestion, bowel movements, urination, pains, and emotions. Your pulse will be palpated and your tongue looked at for its colour, shape, and coating. This information will then be organized and a treatment plan will be constructed.
The number and frequency of treatments will vary from person to person. Some symptoms are relieved after the first treatment, while others will take more time. While a specific problem is being worked on, you may seek treatment once or twice a week, and gradually reduce the frequency to once or twice a month. To simply maintain good health, you may limit your treatments to once every season (four times a year).
